Yes, you can snorkel in Holbox — but not from the beach, and not the way the word usually means in the Caribbean. The island sits on the shallow, sandy northern shelf of the Yucatán, where the water off the main beach is shallow and often cloudy from stirred-up sand. There is no coral reef within swimming distance of Holbox town, Punta Cocos or Punta Mosquito. What travellers call "Holbox snorkeling" is really two boat trips and one night swim.
The first is the whale-shark swim. From 1 June to 15 September the largest fish in the world feed on plankton off the Yucatán coast, and small boats leave Holbox at 6:30 AM to find them. The only whale-shark tour that departs from the island on GetYourGuide is Holbox: Search and Swim with Whale Sharks! All Inclusive. — 7 hours, from $218 per person, rated 4.9 by 267 travellers.
The boat ride to the sharks is long: reviewers describe 1.5 to 3 hours each way, and the law allows two people plus a guide in the water at a time, for two short entries each. It is a swim beside an animal, not a reef snorkel — and out of season it does not exist at all.

The second is the Cabo Catoche reef, 40–45 minutes by boat to the north-east tip of the peninsula. The reef there — operators call it Los Cuevones — is shallow, roughly 2–4 m deep, and the two tours that snorkel it (Cabo Catoche Snorkel And Fishing, from $100, and Cape Catoche Adventure and Nature Sightseeing Tour, from $99) run all year. Both start with a short fishing session.
Then you snorkel over the reef, then eat ceviche made from the catch on a wild beach by the lighthouse. Travellers report rays and nurse sharks; the water is calmer and clearer than at the beach. This is the honest year-round answer to the question.
This is the honest year-round answer to the question.— the reef at Cabo Catoche, all year
The third is a night swim in bioluminescence: a wetsuit, a mask and 1.5 hours in shallow water that glows when you move (Holbox Bioluminescence Experience, from $66). It is not a reef either, but it is the only in-water experience on Holbox that needs no boat.
If you came to Holbox for reef snorkeling like Cozumel or Isla Mujeres, you will be disappointed. If you came for a whale shark in July, or a quiet reef with rays in December, you are in the right place — pick the trip below and check the dates.
